Tooro Palace Access Restricted After King Oyo's Death

By Amina Kabasele2 min read

Fort Portal, August 28, 2026 - Access to the Tooro royal palace was restricted after the sudden death of Omukama Oyo, a development that elevated a regional cultural transition into a national political matter.

The kingdom's prime minister said he was due to meet President Yoweri Museveni to discuss burial arrangements, reflecting the long relationship between the central government and the Tooro monarchy.

The death shocked many subjects who had expected the king to attend upcoming kingdom events. Kingdom officials urged the Abatooro to remain calm, prayerful and united, while saying traditional structures would help maintain stability.

A key unresolved issue is the kingdom's demand for the return of properties seized under the Obote government in 1967, including land titles. The succession and burial process will therefore be watched for its effect on regional stability, land administration and central government relations in western Uganda.
