Tooro Kingdom Begins Mourning Rites For King Oyo

Fort Portal, August 29, 2026 - Tooro Kingdom began traditional mourning rites for King Oyo, suspending the royal anthem and turning royal drums upside down in a significant moment for one of Uganda's historic cultural institutions.

Prayers and condolence signing were underway in Kampala, while the main traditional rites were taking place in the kingdom's western Uganda heartland. Kingdom leaders described King Oyo as a visionary traditional leader whose legacy would endure in Tooro and Uganda.

Tooro Kingdom's prime minister was due to meet President Yoweri Museveni to discuss burial arrangements, reflecting the close relationship between cultural leadership and the central government. Museveni's ties to King Oyo dated back to the reign of the king's late father.

The transition is politically relevant because Uganda's cultural kingdoms retain influence over identity, land, local legitimacy and relations between traditional authorities and the state.
