Teaching of the French Revolution Suspended in Malian Schools
Bamako, October 9, 2025 - Mali’s Ministry of Education issued an official directive to all directors of the Centre d’Animation, instructing them to suspend the teaching of the French Revolution of 1789 in 9th-grade history classes. This lesson, traditionally the first in the 9th-grade history curriculum, has been a cornerstone of civic education in Mali.
The decision comes amid heightened diplomatic tensions between Mali and France, reflecting a broader push by the transitional government to assert cultural sovereignty. Proponents argue that the measure strengthens national identity by prioritizing Malian perspectives in the school curriculum.
However, critics warn that removing this foundational topic could weaken students’ understanding of democratic principles, civic responsibility, and broader global history. The full implications for educational outcomes remain uncertain, and the Ministry has yet to clarify whether alternative content will replace the French Revolution in the syllabus.
Observers note that this move could have ripple effects on history education nationwide, potentially influencing how Malian students understand both their own national heritage and international historical contexts.
