Sudanese Political and Civil Leaders Converge in Nairobi to Form Broad Anti-War Civilian

Nairobi, May 20, 2026 - A wide delegation of Sudanese political figures, civil society actors, and armed movement representatives has gathered in the Kenyan capital to participate in talks aimed at forming an expanded civilian coalition to end Sudan’s ongoing war.

The two-day meetings, scheduled for May 22-23, bring together signatories of the “Sudanese Declaration of Principles for Building a New Homeland,” a framework agreement signed in Nairobi in December 2025. The declaration rejects military solutions to the conflict and calls for coordinated pressure on the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), and allied armed groups to commit to a proposed peace roadmap under the Quad mechanism.

According to Mohamed Abdel Rahman, spokesperson for the Sudan Liberation Movement led by Abdul Wahid al-Nur, the discussions will focus on assessing the current political and security situation in Sudan and expanding the principles of the declaration into a broader unified platform.

He said the initiative aims to build the “broadest civilian front” capable of steering the country toward a political settlement and ending the war. However, he noted that participation would exclude certain political forces, including the National Congress Party, the Islamic Movement, and other groups opposed to peaceful resolution efforts.

The delegation includes prominent political leaders such as Dr. Abdalla Hamdok, head of the “Samoud” coalition; Abdul Wahid Mohamed Nur, leader of the SLM; Omar al-Digeir of the Sudanese Congress Party; and Al-Wathiq al-Berier of the National Umma Party. Also present are figures from various opposition blocs, armed movements, professional associations, and civil society organizations.

Other attendees include Yasir Arman of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (Revolutionary Democratic Current), Babiker Faisal of the Unionist Alliance, and leaders from both the Arab Socialist Ba’ath Party - Original and the National Ba’ath Party, alongside representatives of trade unions and professional networks.

The meeting comes amid stalled peace initiatives and intensifying military operations across multiple regions, as competing armed factions continue to fight for territorial control and political leverage.
