Sudan Confirms Arrival of Fuel Tankers at Port Sudan Amid Price Concerns

Sudan, March 31, 2026 - Sudan’s Ministry of Energy says dozens of fuel tankers carrying petroleum products are currently waiting to unload at Port Sudan, in an effort to ease concerns over potential shortages and recent fuel price increases.

The announcement comes after reports of rising fuel prices across Port Sudan and several other states earlier in the week. Those increases were later reversed following government intervention, according to officials.

The ministry said more than 10 tankers are currently docked at berths in Port Sudan awaiting discharge, while around 20 additional vessels are positioned in the Red Sea pending entry.

Officials clarified that fuel pricing has not been directly managed by the ministry since 2021, when deregulation policies were introduced. Under the current system, pricing is largely determined by market mechanisms, while the ministry focuses on regulation, import oversight, and supply coordination.

Authorities added that they are working with importers to stabilize supply chains and reduce pressure on consumers, despite volatility in global oil markets.

Sudan remains heavily dependent on imported petroleum products, leaving domestic prices vulnerable to international fluctuations and supply disruptions.

Economic officials have previously warned that ongoing conflict and global energy market instability could continue to strain domestic supply chains, with ripple effects on transportation, electricity generation, and essential services.
