Sudan Approves Economic Measures to Stabilize Currency as Pound Hits Record Low
Sudan, April 2, 2026 - Sudan’s Higher Economic Committee has approved a set of emergency measures aimed at stabilizing the national currency and addressing worsening economic instability.
The decisions were taken during a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Kamil Idris and attended by senior ministers responsible for economic planning, finance, and trade.
The Sudanese pound has continued its steep decline since the outbreak of war in April 2023, falling from around 600 per US dollar to approximately 3,665 per US dollar on the parallel market, reflecting severe macroeconomic pressures.
Authorities attribute the collapse to disrupted production, declining exports, and the prolonged impact of the conflict on national economic activity.
The newly approved measures include tighter regulation of luxury imports, policies to expand and diversify exports, and incentives aimed at encouraging Sudanese expatriates to channel remittances through formal banking systems.
Officials also reviewed the country’s foreign exchange reserves, the availability of essential commodities, and broader fiscal performance during the meeting.
The committee stressed the need to regulate export revenues more strictly, reduce government spending, and eliminate informal or illegal fees affecting economic activity.
In addition, state institutions have been instructed to adopt electronic revenue collection systems and complete foreign trade procedures through a centralized digital platform designed to improve transparency and reduce corruption.
