Study Flags High Alcohol Use Among Young Children
Kampala, August 21, 2026 - A Makerere University-supported study has found a 12-month alcohol-use prevalence of 25.2 percent among children aged six to 13, raising concerns over child welfare and public health risks.
The findings point to cheap liquor and gaps in parental supervision as key drivers of early alcohol exposure among children.
The issue carries policy significance because early alcohol abuse can affect school attendance, health outcomes and long-term labour productivity, adding pressure on Uganda's social protection and public health systems.
