South Sudan Offers To Mediate Sudan Peace Process
Juba, August 17, 2026 - South Sudanese President Salva Kiir said Juba is ready to mediate a settlement to Sudan's war, positioning his government as a potential regional channel for talks between the Sudanese Armed Forces, the Rapid Support Forces and allied factions.
Kiir made the offer after meeting Darfur regional governor Minni Arko Minawi in Juba. He said stability in Sudan and South Sudan is closely linked and that his government is prepared to engage all warring parties through diplomatic channels.
Juba previously brokered the October 2020 peace agreement between Khartoum and several rebel groups, including Minawi's Sudan Liberation Movement faction. Implementation has largely stalled, with signatory groups split between the SAF and RSF since the war began in April 2023.
Minawi said a Sudanese delegation would visit Juba soon to review the 2020 deal and assess unresolved issues, including regional stability, land disputes, displaced populations and alleged RSF abuses. Any revived mediation track could affect conflict dynamics in Darfur and the wider investment climate by shaping prospects for security and reconstruction.
