South Kivu Youth Unite for Peace on International Youth Day

Bukavu, South Kivu, August 12, 2026 - On August 12, the Youth Peace and Security coalition, known as Kizazi Cha Amani, celebrated International Youth Day in Bukavu, emphasizing the theme "Different Contexts, Common Aspirations." The event brought together young people from South Kivu and Rwanda, fostering cross-border dialogue and collaboration. Participants engaged in a symbolic peace-tree exercise, which highlighted pressing issues such as economic exclusion, insecurity, governance challenges, and psychosocial distress faced by youth in the region.

The peace tree, constructed during the event, featured resilience trunks representing various initiatives aimed at promoting entrepreneurship, establishing peace clubs, and fostering cultural and sporting activities. These initiatives align with the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2250, which calls for the inclusion of youth in peacebuilding efforts. The event also included a digital campaign titled "My Voice for Peace," encouraging young people to share their stories and aspirations for a peaceful future through social media platforms.

The gathering underscored the importance of youth engagement in addressing the multifaceted challenges that affect their communities. By collaborating with their Rwandan peers, participants aimed to build a stronger network of young leaders committed to peace and stability in the Great Lakes region. The event served not only as a celebration but also as a call to action for governments and institutions to recognize and support the vital role of youth in shaping a peaceful and prosperous future.
