South Kivu: National Route 2 Reopens in Mwenga After Three-Week Blockade
Mwenga, South Kivu, DRC - National Route 2 was reopened to traffic on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, after three weeks of closure in Mwenga territory, previously controlled by AFC-M23 rebels. The reopening allows vehicles and motorcycles transporting essential goods to reach Mwenga and Kamituga, providing much-needed relief to local communities reliant on the route for food and supplies.
Despite the reopening, the road remains in a severely deteriorated condition, complicating travel and transport. Traders have reported significant losses, particularly of perishable goods that were stranded for over twenty days at the Bwahungu checkpoint. Authorities have called for urgent repairs and increased security measures to ensure safe and consistent passage along this strategic artery.
