South Kivu: DRC Forces Launch Multiple Attacks Against AFC/M23

South Kivu, December 2, 2025 - In the early hours of December 2, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) armed forces launched major attacks in several areas of South Kivu province, targeting regions under the control of the AFC/M23 coalition.

The coalition in South Kivu comprises the DRC army (FARDC), Wazalendo groups, Burundian troops, and the FDLR terrorist group, which opposes the Rwandan government.

AFC/M23 spokesman Lawrence Kanyuka warned that the attacks affected densely populated areas, exacerbating the humanitarian situation for civilians.

The areas targeted included the Katogota-Luvungi road in Uvira territory, connecting Kaziba in Walungu with the highlands, Tchivanga-Hombo in Kabare and Kalehe, and Kasika in Mwenga territory.

These offensives follow previous clashes, highlighting the difficulty of enforcing ceasefire agreements despite the creation of a Qatari-backed monitoring body established under the October 14, 2025, agreement between AFC/M23 and the DRC government, which reinforced earlier accords signed in April.

The AFC/M23 maintains that it has the right to defend itself and protect civilians in danger, while the DRC government asserts that its forces are acting in self-defense.
