South Kivu: AFC-M23 Permanently Shuts Lomera Mining Site

Lomera, South Kivu, DRC - The Lomera mining site in the Luhihi group, north of Kabare territory, was permanently closed on November 4, 2025, by the armed group AFC-M23. Artisanal gold miners were ordered to dismantle equipment, including crushers and motorized pumps, effectively halting operations.

The reasons behind the closure have not been disclosed, but the decision has sparked concern among residents and local stakeholders. The citizen movement Pamoja kwa Amani highlighted that the site was a critical source of income for thousands of families.

Experts warn that the shutdown could worsen poverty and unemployment in the region, with potential social repercussions, including increased crime and violence. Many miners who had taken loans to invest in the operation are now left vulnerable and financially exposed.
