South Africa Names New High Commissioner To Rwanda

By Amina Kabasele2 min read

Kigali, August 25, 2026 - Foreign Affairs Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe received copies of credentials from Tinyiko George Hlungwane, South Africa's high commissioner-designate to Rwanda, as Kigali and Pretoria continue efforts to strengthen ties.

The appointment follows the tenure of South Africa's previous ambassador to Rwanda, who arrived in 2020 and served until late 2024. It comes after Nduhungirehe visited South Africa in June 2026 for talks with his counterpart.

During those talks, both governments agreed on measures to deepen long-standing relations. Discussions also included plans for Rwandans with ordinary passports to be granted visas, a step that could support mobility and people-to-people links between the two countries.
