Sankuru River: Whaling Boat Capsizes, Around Fifty Survivors
Ilebo, Kasai Province, November 17, 2025 - A whaling boat capsized on the Sankuru River on Monday, leaving around fifty survivors out of the 120 passengers on board.
Local civil society sources reported that the vessel, which had departed from Kole, was overloaded with passengers and cargo. The boat struck a tree trunk near Dibulansenba, close to its confluence with the Kasai River, in an area known for dangerous whirlpools.
Rescue efforts are ongoing as authorities continue search operations for the missing passengers.
