Rwandan Senior Prison Guards Graduate in Zimbabwe
Harare, Zimbabwe - A total of 42 prison guards, including five Rwandans, successfully completed the Senior Management Development Course in Corrections (SMDCC), which began in January 2025. The graduation ceremony was held on December 12, 2025, and attended by the First Secretary at the Rwandan Embassy in Zimbabwe, Nikuze Nkusi Euphrasie, Zimbabwe’s Minister of Justice, Ziyambi Ziyambi, and other senior officials.
This marks the third batch of graduates, and the second batch for the Rwandan Prison Service at this level.
All 42 participants were awarded the Senior Correctional Officers’ Ring, a Diploma in Entrepreneurship and Management from Zimbabwe Open University, and a Certificate in Farm Management from the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service Staff College.
The programme is part of the Rwandan Correctional Service’s (RCS) initiative to enhance performance, knowledge sharing, and training through international collaboration.
Subjects covered included correctional policy and management, effective planning, emergency management, human rights and ethical management, and employee welfare. Participants also gained skills in productive activities, innovation, and job creation.
Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi emphasized that effective correctional management focuses on maintaining security, promoting morale, and treating prisoners as human beings. He highlighted the importance of temporary release programmes to allow prisoners to serve sentences in society and the use of technology to accelerate reform.
