Rwanda Wins 10 Medals at 2025 African Cycling Championships

Ukunda, Kenya, November 23, 2025 - Rwanda concluded the four-day 2025 African Cycling Championships with a strong performance, finishing third overall with 10 medals, including two golds. The 19th edition of the Championships saw 30 countries compete across men's, women's, under-23, under-19, and under-17 categories.

The final day featured road races in the men's and boys' under-23 and under-19 categories, where Eritrea dominated. In the men's 163.8km race, Merhawi Kudus took gold, followed by his compatriot Aman Awet, clocking three hours, 53 minutes, and six seconds, just five seconds behind Algeria’s Mimouni Oussama Abdellah.

Rwandan Niyonkuru Samuel finished fourth, 13 seconds behind, while Mugisha Moïse came sixth, 16 seconds behind. Niyonkuru’s performance earned him a bronze medal in the under-23 category, behind Aman Awet (gold) and Mimouni (silver).

Rwanda’s two gold medals were won by Akimana Donatha (under-17 road race) and Nyirarukundo Claudette (under-23 road race). The country also secured four silver medals, including one for Team Rwanda’s mixed team and two by Mwamikazi Jazilla, and four bronze medals won by Masengesho Yvonne, Nyirarukundo Claudette, Nirere Xaveline, and Niyonkuru Samuel.

At this year’s Championships, Rwanda was represented by 23 riders, up from 20 in 2024, when the team won four medals, and eight medals in 2023 in Accra, Ghana.
