Rwanda Welcomes 22 Citizens Returning from Democratic Republic of Congo

Rusizi, February 25, 2026 - Rwanda welcomed 22 of its citizens returning from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), including individuals who had lived in exile for over 30 years, expressing regret over the years lost during displacement and the impact on their education and family life.

The returnees arrived via the Rusizi I Border on February 24, 2026, marking the second group this year to come back from the DRC. The group includes two men, four women, and 16 children. They were first received at the Nyarushishi temporary camp before being reunited with their families.

Speaking to local media, the returnees described years spent in the DRC as a period of hardship, noting that their children were unable to attend school and grew up under difficult conditions in a war zone. One returnee said, “This is a great loss because we kept running away and our children were unable to study and were always in trouble.” Another added, “My older brother returned first and told me that Rwanda was safe, so we decided to come back.”

The returnees were warmly received by the Rusizi District Administration, UNHCR staff, and security forces. The Mayor of Rusizi District, Sindayiheba Phanuel, described the return as a significant step toward leaving behind a history of conflict and hatred, encouraging others still in exile to consider returning. He said, “Their arrival is good news as they come to join other Rwandans in rebuilding the country. We want to show others that Rwanda is peaceful and encourage them to make their own decision to return.”

The repatriation reflects Rwanda’s ongoing efforts to support displaced citizens, promote reconciliation, and facilitate family reunification.
