Rwanda Sees 20% Surge in Flu Cases as Health Ministry Urges Parental Vigilance

Kigali, November 22, 2025 - Kigali-Rwanda is experiencing a 20% increase in flu cases, prompting the Ministry of Health to urge parents and schools to take extra precautions. Minister of Health Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana issued the warning during an interview with RBA on 17 November in Kigali, following a noticeable rise in infections across the country in recent days. The situation has already turned tragic in Rubavu District, where three children died from flu-related complications.

Dr. Nsanzimana reassured the public that the country is not facing an epidemic, but stressed that heightened vigilance is essential as cases are likely to continue rising.

“The message we would like to give to people is that they should not be afraid of another epidemic,” he said. “We encourage them to avoid infecting others because a person with flu can infect those with low immunity and they will fall ill.”

The minister noted that hospitals have recorded a 20% rise in flu patients, and authorities anticipate a further surge in December. Seasonal patterns indicate that flu cases typically climb during the rainy season.

Schools remain a particular concern, as children often play in close proximity, increasing the risk of transmission. Dr. Nsanzimana called on parents to keep sick children at home until they fully recover, stressing that sending them to school could worsen the spread and endanger other children.

During this rainy period, the Ministry of Health is encouraging citizens to take preventive measures including frequent handwashing, regular physical exercise, wearing masks when sick, and seeking medical attention if they develop symptoms such as high fever, chest pain, persistent cough, shortness of breath, or fatigue.
