Rwanda Secures EIB Financing For Volcanoes Region Climate Resilience
Kigali, August 5, 2026 - Rwanda has secured 65 million euros, about Rwf109.7 billion, from the European Investment Bank to strengthen climate resilience in the Volcanoes region, where floods, landslides and soil erosion have repeatedly damaged communities, farmland and infrastructure.
The financing agreement was signed by the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning and the European Investment Bank. The funds will support the Volcanoes Community Resilience Project across Burera, Gakenke, Musanze, Nyabihu, Ngororero, Rubavu, Rutsiro and Muhanga districts.
Project documents show the eight districts recorded 539 deaths and 316 serious injuries from climate-related disasters between 2013 and mid-2023. During the same period, 18,415 homes were damaged, 7,740 hectares of crops were destroyed, nearly 2,000 livestock were lost and 345 roads and related infrastructure were damaged.
The project is expected to benefit more than 2.3 million people through flood protection works, watershed restoration, landscape rehabilitation, erosion control, biodiversity conservation and livelihood support. It will be coordinated by the Ministry of Environment with implementation support from water, meteorology, environment and development agencies.
The financing adds to Rwanda's climate infrastructure pipeline and is relevant for investors tracking resilience spending, public works, conservation-linked development and risk reduction in tourism and agriculture zones.
