Rwanda Replaces 160 Police Officers in South Sudan Peacekeeping Mission

KIGALI, January 12, 2026 - Rwanda National Police has rotated 160 police officers from the RWAFPU3-7 team, who returned to Kigali after a one-year deployment in South Sudan under the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in South Sudan. The outgoing team, led by SSP Devotha Nyinawumuntu, was based in Juba and immediately replaced by the RWAFPU3-8 team, commanded by SSP Donatha Iribagiza.

The police officers’ duties in South Sudan included restoring peace and security, protecting civilians, safeguarding United Nations personnel and operations, and promoting the well-being of local populations.

At Kigali International Airport, the incoming team was received by CP Yahaya Kamunuga, Commissioner of Police, who thanked the returning officers for their dedication and professionalism. He said:

“You have returned to Rwanda to continue serving your country. You may find that things have changed. But your integrity and dedication must remain the same.”

On behalf of the outgoing team, SP Vincent Mwine Rubimbura, deputy leader of RWAFPU3-7, highlighted key community engagement initiatives carried out during their deployment. In addition to protecting civilians and UN personnel, the team worked to strengthen relations with the local population through activities such as community service, school renovations, distribution of mosquito nets and school supplies, and providing medical care and clean water to vulnerable families.

SP Rubimbura noted that these efforts have enhanced trust and cooperation between the police and local communities, reinforcing the overall peacekeeping mission.
