Rwanda Police Shoot Dead Suspect in Murder and Robbery Case
Kigali, January 7, 2026 - The Rwanda National Police in the Eastern Province reported that Dukuzumuremyi Eric, a suspect wanted for the robbery and murder of a motorcyclist in Kirehe District, was shot dead after attempting to flee from law enforcement.
According to Eastern Province Police Spokesperson SP Hamdun Twizeyimana, Dukuzumuremyi had previously ambushed a motorcyclist on January 2, 2026, killing him and stealing his motorcycle. Following the attack, the police launched a search with help from local residents, eventually locating the suspect in Nyagatare District.
On the morning of January 7, Dukuzumuremyi was being escorted by officers to reveal the locations where he had hidden stolen items. During the process, he attempted to escape, prompting the police to open fire, resulting in his death.
SP Twizeyimana urged the public to refrain from theft, reminding citizens that security forces remain vigilant and that stealing is a serious crime with legal consequences.
