Rwanda Police Report Over 300 Road Accidents in Kigali in Three Months

Kigali, November 22, 2025 - The Rwanda National Police (RNP) has revealed that more than 300 road accidents were recorded in Kigali City between August and October 2025, with several resulting in fatalities. The figures were announced on November 17, 2025, by RNP Spokesperson ACP Boniface Rutikanga during the ongoing Turindane-Tugereyo Amahoro road safety campaign.

The latest phase of the campaign was held in Magerwa, Gikondo, where truck drivers, public transport operators, cyclists, and pedestrians gathered for safety sensitization activities.

ACP Rutikanga noted that the majority of recent accidents in Kigali involve motorcyclists.“In the past three months, we have had about 300 accidents here in Kigali City, though most of them were not very serious,” he said. He added that no passenger buses were involved in accidents during the same period.

During the event, DCG Jeanne Chantal Ujeneza, the Deputy Commissioner General of Police in charge of Administration and Personnel, urged road users to avoid behaviors that increase the risk of accidents. “Drivers should avoid distractions,” she said. “Prepare properly before leaving home, avoid overspeeding, and respect traffic signs.”

She further warned against using mobile phones while driving and emphasized that drinking and driving remains a major cause of fatal crashes.

Kigali City Mayor Samuel Dusengiyumva commended the police for their continued commitment to reducing road accidents through countrywide awareness campaigns.“We thank the police leadership for this initiative. The Turindane Tugereyo Amahoro program reflects strong collaboration between government institutions, local authorities, and security agencies to ensure safety for all,” he said.

National data shows a fluctuating but persistent rise in road accidents over the years. Rwanda recorded 621 accidents in 2021, 676 in 2022, 761 in 2023, 751 in 2024, and 719 accidents in the first nine months of 2025, underscoring the urgency of ongoing safety efforts.
