Rwanda Needs $12 Billion to Cut Greenhouse Gas Emissions by 2035

The Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA) has announced that the country will require over $12 billion in funding to achieve its target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 53% by 2035, as part of its long-term climate resilience strategy.

According to REMA, the investment will support nationwide efforts to transition toward a low-carbon and climate-resilient economy, with key funding directed toward renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, green infrastructure, and industrial efficiency.

A substantial share of the funds will go to clean energy projects, including the expansion of solar power and other renewable sources. Rwanda also plans to promote electric mobility, reduce dependence on fossil fuels such as wood and coal, and scale up the use of biogas and methane gas generation.

Officials estimate that these measures could cut up to 6.24 million tonnes (Mt) of greenhouse gas emissions.

Beyond energy, part of the investment will focus on enhancing energy efficiency in both industrial and household activities to make clean energy affordable and sustainable across the country.

The initiative aligns with Rwanda’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement, reaffirming its commitment to environmental protection and a green economy.
