Rwanda: Eight Fatal Accidents Recorded During Christmas and New Year Holidays

Kigali, January 2, 2026 - Rwanda National Police (RNP) reported eight serious accidents over the Christmas and New Year period, spanning December 24, 2025, to January 2, 2026. Police Spokesperson ACP Boniface Rutikanga noted that these incidents occurred despite the generally smooth and secure conduct of festivities across the country.

“It was a week filled with travel, concerts, and entertainment. Security was good, and residents were able to enjoy the celebrations safely,” ACP Rutikanga said, emphasizing that minor incidents linked to drunkenness did not disrupt the overall festivities.

The accidents were evenly split between the holiday periods: four serious accidents occurred on December 24-25, 2025, and four more between December 31, 2025, and January 1, 2026. While exact casualty figures were not disclosed, these accidents contributed to the holiday’s tragic toll.

In addition to accidents, the police arrested 95 people nationwide for driving under the influence of alcohol, with 75% of offenders operating motorcycles or bicycles. Bunani recorded the highest number of arrests, with 47 individuals detained.

RNP reminded the public that Rwanda’s traffic laws impose fines of 150,000 Rwf, vehicle impoundment up to seven days, and possible imprisonment from seven days to two months for driving under the influence.

ACP Rutikanga also highlighted that road safety remains a significant concern in Rwanda, citing that 41,164 accidents occurred between 2022 and October 2025, resulting in 2,907 deaths, often caused by speeding, distracted driving, and driving under the influence.

“We urge residents to comply with traffic safety programs to prevent accidents and ensure public safety,” he concluded.
