Rwanda Denounces DRC for Destabilizing Regional Peace

On March 5, 2026, before the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, Rwanda condemned the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) government for allegedly undermining peace in the Great Lakes region. Edmond Tubanambazi, First Counselor at the Rwandan Embassy in Switzerland and at the UN offices in Geneva, emphasized that peace has been a cornerstone of Rwanda’s recovery over the past 32 years following the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. He said the country continues to prioritize unity, reconciliation, and a culture of peace in its national reconstruction. Tubanambazi accused the DRC of harboring and collaborating with the FDLR terrorist group, instead of dismantling it, and of integrating FDLR fighters into the FARDC and allied groups, posing a threat to regional security. He stressed that these actions have been repeatedly highlighted by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the UN Security Council. Rwanda, he added, is actively supporting regional security measures, including those under the African Union-led coalition and the Washington Peace Accords, and called for accountability and restraint to prevent armed groups from spreading hatred and committing crimes.
