Rwanda Defence Forces Return from Jamaica Mission
Kigali, March 16, 2026 - The Rwanda Defence Forces (RDF) team of engineers has returned to Kigali after completing a mission in Jamaica to assist with repairs of infrastructure and houses damaged by Cyclone Melissa.
The team arrived at Kigali International Airport on Monday morning, concluding a 60-day mission that began on 14 January 2026.
Welcoming them, the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Maj Alex Kagame, praised the soldiers for their dedication, professionalism, and teamwork. “The RDF culture and values were very clear. We have not heard anything negative from them during their time in Jamaica. Please give them a round of applause,” he said.
During the mission, RDF personnel focused on repairing infrastructure and homes in Montego Bay, Province of St James, earning appreciation from local residents.
The Chief of Defence Staff of Jamaica, Vice Admiral Antonette Wemyss-Gorman, commended the RDF for their work. “They are sincere, professional, and have done a lot in a short time. They spent time with the community and have not caused any issues. We are very proud of these peacekeepers,” she said.
Vice Admiral Wemyss-Gorman emphasized that the collaboration would continue to strengthen the relationship between Rwanda and Jamaica. “The people you helped will not forget the RDF under President Kagame’s leadership. We will continue working to preserve this good relationship,” she added.
