Rwanda Confronts Deadly Toxic Alcohol Crisis With Enforcement Push

Kigali, August 12, 2026 - Rwanda is facing a public health and consumer safety crisis after adulterated alcoholic drinks were linked to at least 50 deaths since January, prompting authorities to ban a number of unsafe products and intensify enforcement against illicit producers.

Health officials have warned that some alcoholic drinks have been mixed with toxic substances including methanol, solvents, industrial chemicals, soap and brick powder. Such substances can cause blindness, neurological damage, organ failure and death.

The Rwanda National Police launched the "SI ZO ZAWE, ZANGE" campaign in July to urge consumers to reject unsafe and adulterated beverages. The campaign followed renewed reports of deaths and serious illnesses in different parts of the country.

The crisis has also drawn attention to regulatory risks in Rwanda's beverage market after earlier investigations found excessive methanol in a locally produced drink whose manufacturer was later closed. For investors, the issue underscores the importance of product safety, formal distribution channels and enforcement capacity in consumer goods sectors.
