Rwanda and Egypt Hold Talks to Strengthen Water Sector Cooperation

Kigali, January 30, 2026 - Egypt’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Prof. Hani Sewilam, is in Rwanda for high-level talks aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation in the water sector and the management of natural water resources.

Prof. Sewilam arrived in Kigali on Thursday, January 29, 2026, and is scheduled to meet with Rwanda’s Minister of Environment, Dr. Bernadette Arapu, and the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Dr. Ndabamenye Telesphore, according to the Egyptian Ministry of Water Resources.

The Egyptian official and his Rwandan counterparts are also expected to attend the closing ceremony of the Rwanda-Egypt Joint Steering Group meeting and visit various sites earmarked for the implementation of joint projects.

Officials said the discussions aim to provide practical solutions through knowledge-sharing, capacity building, and support for the execution of bilateral initiatives.

In September 2025, Rwanda and Egypt signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during President Paul Kagame’s visit to Egypt, covering areas such as water management, investment promotion, land exchange, and urban and housing development.

The two countries maintain strong ties across several sectors, including trade and investment, health, defense, infrastructure, and education.
