Rwanda Alcohol Ban Draws Regional Attention In Burundi

Kigali, August 27, 2026 - Rwanda's crackdown on substandard hard alcohol drew regional attention after Burundi's parliament speaker urged his government to consider a similar response to dangerous locally made spirits.

Daniel Gelase Ndabirabe told Burundian lawmakers on August 25 that strong liquors were harming citizens and called for rapid action by national, provincial and communal authorities.

His remarks came as Rwanda has banned 52 types of alcohol from its market, including products imported from India, Kenya, Uganda and Burundi, and moved against factories linked to the banned drinks.

The issue has public health and regulatory implications for the region, affecting import controls, consumer safety standards and cross-border alcohol trade.
