Rubavu Farmers Complete Rwf2 Billion Onion Drying And Storage Facility

By Jean-Marc Okito2 min read

Rubavu, August 23, 2026 - Onion and garlic farmers in Rubavu District completed a Rwf2 billion drying and storage facility designed to reduce post-harvest losses and stabilize returns when market demand is weak.

The facility was built in Nyamirango Cell in Kanzenze Sector. It can receive four tons of onions per day and store up to 100 tons, with drying technology expected to preserve onions for as long as six months without spoilage.

The site is owned by farmers in the KOBATU Cooperative but is expected to serve producers in Mudende, Cyanzarwe, Kanzenze, Busasamana, Bugeshi and Nyakiliba sectors.

For Rwanda's agricultural economy, the investment strengthens local value chains in a border district and could improve farmer incomes by reducing distress sales and crop losses.
