RSF-Aligned Bloc Boycotts Addis Ababa Peace Consultations

Nyala, July 31, 2026 - An alliance of Sudanese political groups aligned with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces declined an invitation to join peace consultations in Addis Ababa, citing concerns over how the process is being structured. The Founding Sudan Coalition, known as Tasis, joined other factions boycotting the talks, including the anti-war Somoud coalition led by former Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and the Sudan Liberation Movement led by Abdel Wahid al-Nur.

Other political groups, including the Democratic Block coalition, took part in the current round. The consultations are being facilitated by a diplomatic mechanism that includes the African Union, United Nations, European Union, Arab League and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development.

The initiative is intended to bring rival Sudanese factions into a framework for a civilian-led political transition. Tasis said it supported international mediation in principle but called for a comprehensive review of participant selection and the format of the talks.

The boycott underscores the difficulty mediators face in building a credible political track while Sudan's military conflict remains unresolved.
