Rights Institute Alerts Presidency Over Mining Pollution Impunity Cases

Lubumbashi, Haut-Katanga, August 6, 2026 - The Institute for Human Rights Research (IRDH) has submitted a memorandum to President Félix Tshisekedi, highlighting serious concerns regarding environmental pollution linked to mining activities in the Haut-Katanga province. The document specifically addresses allegations against SOMIKA, CDM, and Chemaf, three prominent mining companies operating in the region. According to the IRDH, SOMIKA has been implicated in acid effluent spills that occurred on April 26 and April 29, 2026, at its Kwampisha Kipushi site, which reportedly contaminated the Kasonta and Kibunduka rivers, flowing toward INERA lake.

SOMIKA has denied these allegations, asserting that there has been no contamination resulting from its operations. However, the IRDH points to a pattern of recurrent complaints from local communities dating back to 2021, particularly from the Somika quarter and the nearby Kimilolo area. The memorandum calls for effective remediation measures to address the ongoing environmental degradation, especially in light of the current copper-cobalt boom that has intensified mining activities in the region.

The IRDH's appeal comes at a time when the Congolese government is under increasing pressure to enforce environmental regulations and hold companies accountable for their impact on local ecosystems. The organization emphasizes the need for a comprehensive investigation into these pollution claims and urges the presidency to take decisive action to protect the rights and health of affected communities. As the mining sector continues to thrive, the balance between economic development and environmental stewardship remains a critical challenge for the DRC.
