RIB Returns Over 431 Stolen Phones Worth 94.5 Million FRw

Kigali, December 1, 2025 - The Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) has returned 431 phones valued at 94.5 million FRw to their owners. The devices, seized since May 2025, included both medium-range and high-end models, some of which had been stolen from traders who unknowingly purchased them.

The returned phones were taken from various locations, including provinces and Kigali, notably Nyabugogo Railway Station. The thefts occurred in diverse circumstances, including:

127 phones stolen from bicycles and buses

80 phones stolen directly from owners

63 phones stolen through fraud

59 phones taken from homes

Others stolen in public spaces, such as weddings, bars, and by motorcyclists tricking passengers

In the process of recovering the devices, 23 suspects were arrested, while 12 traders who had purchased stolen phones agreed to return them and were not prosecuted.

RIB spokesperson Dr. Murangira Thierry urged the public to remain vigilant and protect their devices.“Negligence makes it easy for thieves. At one wedding, for example, 10 phones were stolen,” he said. He advised people paying motorcyclists with phones to maintain distance to reduce the risk of theft.

Dr. Murangira also warned against buying stolen phones, highlighting the financial losses and legal risks involved. “Those who buy stolen phones not only lose money, but also encourage theft,” he said, explaining that stolen devices often circulate through buyers who cannot trace the original thief.

Regarding used phone dealers, RIB clarified that they are not a problem if they document ownership, ensuring transparency and preventing the circulation of stolen devices.

Finally, Dr. Murangira asked victims of theft to exercise patience, emphasizing that recovering stolen phones is complex, but protecting devices remains crucial.
