Residents of Akagera National Park to Benefit from 1.2 Billion Rwf in Tourism Revenue

Kayonza, Rwanda - 19 November 2025 - Residents living around Akagera National Park are set to receive 1.285 billion Rwf in revenue from tourism during the 2025/2026 financial year, the Park administration announced. This initiative is being carried out in collaboration with the three Eastern Province districts that share the park: Kayonza, Gatsibo, and Nyagatare.

The revenue distribution will see Kayonza District receive 857 million Rwf, Gatsibo 142 million Rwf, and Nyagatare 285 million Rwf. To ensure that the funds are used effectively, the Park administration and district authorities have launched a campaign to engage residents, seeking their input on potential projects to be funded.

During meetings in Rwinkwavu, Kabare, and Ndego sectors, Kayonza District Mayor Nyemazi John Bosco praised residents for offering ideas focused on community development. He assured participants that their suggestions would guide project implementation.

Some of the proposed projects include the construction of a youth center with health services, improvements in access to clean water, and the renovation and expansion of local health centers. Residents emphasized that these initiatives would help address issues such as teenage pregnancies, HIV prevention, and general health accessibility.

Mayor Nyemazi also reminded residents of the importance of protecting the park from poachers, noting that sustainable conservation directly contributes to their income from tourism.

Last year, Akagera National Park generated $4.7 million in revenue, highlighting its critical role in supporting local development across Nyagatare, Gatsibo, and Kayonza districts.
