Repatriation of 150 Malians in Distress from Algeria and Tunisia: Humanitarian Support for the Diaspora

By Sarah Ndaya2 min readFrançais

Bamako, December 18, 2025 - On International Migrants Day, 150 Malians were repatriated to Mali via Niger, in partnership with the International Organization for Migration (IOM). They were welcomed by Minister for Malians Living Abroad and African Integration, Mossa Ag Attaher, and will receive assistance for socio-economic reintegration.

This operation reflects the government’s commitment to supporting Malians in distress abroad, addressing migration vulnerabilities exacerbated by regional crises. It also strengthens national cohesion and could reduce irregular migration flows through reintegration programs.

However, without structural reforms to create local opportunities, the initiative risks failing to tackle root causes of migration, such as unemployment and insecurity.
