Provisional Governor of Sankuru Calls for Unity After Election Victory

Kinshasa, April 19, 2026 - Provisionally declared governor of Sankuru province by the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI), following the April 15 vote, Senator Jules Lodi Emongo has called for unity and pledged to meet expectations as he prepares to assume leadership of the province.

The newly elected governor was received in Kinshasa on April 18 by the Permanent Secretary of the Sacred Union of the Nation, André Mbata, alongside Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, Security, Decentralization, and Customary Affairs Jacquemain Shabani. The meeting took place at the headquarters of the Sacred Union of the Nation, the ruling political platform supporting President Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo.

The discussions focused on consolidating political support following the provisional election results and preparing the incoming provincial leadership for governance responsibilities. Officials urged the new governor to prioritize development, institutional cohesion, and effective administration in Sankuru.

Speaking to the press after the meeting, Lodi Emongo emphasized unity as a central priority for his mandate, describing it as essential for addressing the province’s challenges. He said he was committed to working with all stakeholders to ensure stability and progress in Sankuru.

The Permanent Secretary of the Sacred Union congratulated provincial deputies for supporting the ruling platform’s candidate and urged the incoming leadership to align its actions with the priorities of the national leadership.

The electoral process remains ongoing, with the appeals phase scheduled to run from April 17 to 24 before the Sankuru Court of Appeal acting as an administrative court. Final validation procedures, including judicial review and official proclamation of results, are expected in early May, followed by submission of the file for presidential investiture.

Although Lodi Emongo ran as an independent candidate, he was presented by the Sacred Union as its preferred contender, a political alignment that has reportedly sparked internal tensions within the ruling coalition.

Once confirmed by the courts and formally invested by the Head of State, he is expected to succeed the outgoing provincial governor following institutional procedures governing provincial leadership transitions.
