President Kagame signals possible review of morning prayer broadcast suspension

Kigali, March 25, 2026 - President Paul Kagame has indicated that the issue surrounding the suspension of the morning mosque broadcast may be reviewed, suggesting that authorities could reconsider the current restrictions.

The remarks were made during a meeting with members of the Muslim community in Rwanda, where concerns were raised over the continued suspension of the early morning mosque call, which worshippers said has affected their daily religious routine.

In response, President Kagame stated that the matter could be examined and assessed by relevant authorities, emphasizing that it is a manageable issue requiring review rather than immediate dismissal.

He noted that the early morning period coincides with normal waking hours, adding that the situation should be evaluated in a practical manner while considering public concerns.

The suspension of amplified mosque broadcasts was introduced in previous years following concerns over noise levels in residential areas, in line with public order regulations. Authorities at the time stated that while the external broadcasts were restricted, religious observance itself was not prohibited.
