Parliament Summons Former UHRC Accounting Officer Over Shs70 Million Furniture Spending
Kampala, August 18, 2026 - Parliament's public accountability scrutiny of the Uganda Human Rights Commission intensified after a former accounting officer was summoned over Shs70 million spent on furniture.
The expenditure was flagged by the Auditor General, prompting lawmakers to demand an explanation from the former official. Committee members resolved to compel her appearance after UHRC officials arrived at Parliament without her.
The proceedings also exposed internal dysfunction and personal friction within the human rights watchdog. The scrutiny comes as the UHRC secretary and five other senior officials face charges before the Anti-Corruption Court.
The matter is politically significant because it affects public confidence in a constitutional body responsible for rights oversight and institutional accountability.
