Ugandan Police Dismantle Suspected Counterfeit Currency Ring
Lira, July 2, 2026 - Ugandan authorities have arrested four suspects following the seizure of United States dollar notes with a purported face value of USD 9 million during an intelligence-led operation targeting a suspected counterfeit currency network in Lira City.
The operation was conducted in Ireda Shamba Cell, Lira City East Division, after investigators received information that counterfeit currency and related materials were being stored at a private residence. A lawful search of the property led to the discovery of a safe believed to contain the suspected counterfeit notes.
During the operation, officers recovered approximately 100 bundles of USD 100 notes suspected to be counterfeit, along with several motor vehicle logbooks and additional United States dollar notes in various denominations.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the safe had been delivered to the residence by one of the suspects, who is already facing separate allegations of obtaining money by false pretences. Authorities also believe the suspects may have been involved in similar activities over an extended period, with possible links to associates operating in Soroti City.
The recovered currency has been secured as evidence and will undergo forensic examination to determine its authenticity. Investigators are working to establish the full extent of the suspected network and identify any additional individuals connected to the operation.
Authorities said investigations remain ongoing and that further arrests are expected as efforts continue to dismantle the alleged counterfeit currency network.
