Ouagadougou Prison Launches Kidney Health Screening Campaign for Inmates

Ouagadougou, December 16, 2025 - Inmates at the Ouagadougou Detention and Correction Center (MACO) are benefiting from a free kidney disease screening campaign organized by the nephrology department of Tengandogo University Hospital Center (CHU).

Under the theme “You Are All Amazing: The Detective, The Provocateur, The Saint of Retinal Diseases,” the initiative aims to bring preventive healthcare closer to vulnerable populations, particularly incarcerated individuals, who often face living conditions conducive to the development of silent illnesses.

The campaign is held under the patronage of Minister of Justice Edasso Rodrigue Bayala, represented by special advisor Geoffroy Yogo, who highlighted the challenges prisoners face in accessing healthcare despite ongoing governmental efforts.

From December 15 to 19, 2025, inmates will attend awareness sessions on prison health and kidney care, in addition to receiving essential medical exams, including urine tests, vital sign monitoring, capillary blood glucose testing, and blood tests. These screenings are critical for the early detection and prevention of kidney disease among the incarcerated population.
