Otunnu Pushes UN Reform As Uganda-Backed Bid Faces Global Hurdles

By Amina Kabasele2 min read

Kampala, August 21, 2026 - Uganda-backed contender Otunnu has called for continued reform of the United Nations and restoration of its moral authority as his campaign for the organisation's top post faces a crowded and geopolitically complex field.

Nominated by the Ugandan government, Otunnu is one of eight global contenders. Ivonne Baki has entered the race as the eighth candidate and the second from Ecuador.

A previous effort to secure Uganda's endorsement for the same role failed to materialise amid political differences, underscoring the domestic and diplomatic sensitivities surrounding the current bid.

For Uganda, the campaign is a diplomatic test that could raise the country's profile in multilateral affairs, even as major-power alignments shape the outcome.
