Otunnu Gains Ground In Race For Top UN Post

By Amina Kabasele3 min read

Kampala, August 22, 2026 - Uganda's candidate Olara Otunnu gained momentum in the race for a top United Nations post after addressing member states, improving his standing in the second round of polling.

Otunnu moved from two encourage votes in the first round to five in the second, the sharpest percentage gain among the eight candidates in the contest.

In his vision statement, Otunnu emphasized continued institutional reforms at the United Nations. The broader race remains fluid, with geopolitical considerations still shaping the outlook.

A stronger showing by Uganda's candidate would raise Kampala's diplomatic profile, even as the contest remains highly competitive.
