Opposition Candidate Congratulates President Guelleh in Post-Election Meeting
Djibouti, April 14, 2026 - The President of the Republic, Ismail Omar Guelleh, received the defeated presidential candidate, Mohamed Farah Samatar of the Unified Democratic Centre (CDU), at the Presidential Palace on Tuesday morning, in a post-election meeting described by official sources as unprecedented.
The visit comes days after the April 10 presidential election and follows Samatar’s public concession of defeat. According to statements made after the meeting, the opposition candidate reiterated his congratulations to President Guelleh and wished him success in leading the country.
“Although I had already expressed my warmest congratulations to the re-elected president through the press, I still wanted to meet with him in person to wish him success in leading our country,” Samatar said.
He added that his gesture reflected “allegiance and submission to the will of the people,” following what he described as a clear expression of popular support for the incumbent leadership.
During the meeting, Samatar also indicated that he had discussed aspects of his political vision for the country, expressing hope that some of these ideas could be considered within the broader national agenda.
The encounter, held at the Presidential Palace, is being presented by officials as a sign of political maturity and a step toward reinforcing national cohesion in the post-election period.
