Nyarugenge Court Upholds 30-Day Detention for Barafinda Sekikubo Fred

Kigali, March 12, 2026 - The Nyarugenge High Court has ruled that Barafinda Sekikubo Fred must remain in detention for 30 days, dismissing his appeal against the original detention order. The decision was read on 12 March 2026 in his absence.

Barafinda, along with co-defendants Mazimpaka Patrick, Nizeyimana Didier (Mucoma), Japhet Nkeramihigo, and Tumukunde, had challenged a prior ruling by the Kicukiro Primary Court, which ordered their detention on 3 March 2026.

The prosecution alleges that Barafinda, Mazimpaka, and Nkeramihigo conspired to create and broadcast YouTube interviews aimed at spreading rumors, inciting public dissent, and seeking protection from external donors who followed their content.

While Barafinda’s co-defendants were released on bail and prosecuted without detention on 9 March 2026, his own appeal for provisional release was argued by his brother in a closed-door hearing on the same day. The High Court ultimately rejected the appeal, confirming that Barafinda will remain in custody for the full 30-day period.
