North Kivu: Road Rehabilitation and Airport Expansion Project Launched in Walikale
Walikale, November 23, 2025 - Governor Major General Kakule Somo Evariste inaugurated a road rehabilitation project in Walikale territory, targeting long-isolated areas. The initiative covers the Walikale-Kibuwa road (85 km), Walikale-Itebero road, and several avenues in the town of Walikale, including the construction of eight bridges.
Funded by the North Kivu Agricultural Sector Support Project (PASA N-K) and executed by four companies, the eight-month project aims to improve transportation of agricultural products to urban centers and reduce isolation caused by the M23 insurgency, which has pressured local communities for nearly a year.
In parallel, the governor announced the expansion of the Kigoma airfield runway from 1,113 to 1,800 meters, a strategic infrastructure investment supported by the provincial government. Residents see these projects as a sign of hope for economic development and improved connectivity in conflict-affected North Kivu.
