North Kivu and South Kivu: Torrential Rains Ravage Schools, Disrupt Start of School Year

By Sarah Ndaya2 min readFrançais

In late October and early November 2025, torrential rains severely damaged school infrastructure in the territories of Rutshuru (North Kivu) and Kalehe (South Kivu), destroying the roofs of at least 22 schools and forcing hundreds of students to attend classes in precarious conditions-outdoors, under trees, or in makeshift shelters.

In Rutshuru, the primary schools of Kamusenda, Safi, and Selemani were particularly affected, while in Kalehe, a dozen schools in the Kalonge area suffered significant damage.

Teachers and local officials are warning of the urgent need for rapid reconstruction to ensure student safety and the continuity of education, calling on the government and humanitarian organizations to intervene without delay.
