Niger: Uranium Convoys Continue Amid High Tension

Niamey, December 2, 2025 - The uranium sector in Niger remains at the center of escalating tensions following the departure of the first convoy from the SOMAÏR site in Arlit on November 27. Despite warnings from Orano and prior ICSID rulings, multiple shipments have left northern Niger under heavy military escort, reflecting both the political sensitivity and strategic importance of the material.

Local sources reported that the first convoy traveled the Arlit-Agadez road before continuing to Tahoua, arriving in Abalak on December 1. The convoy was protected by Nigerien security units and accompanied by 31 Russian mercenaries, underscoring the high-risk nature of the transport.

In Niamey, President General Abdourahamane Tiani reaffirmed that the uranium belongs “to the Nigerien people” and that its export does not depend “on anyone’s authorization.” Government sources indicate that Niger is seeking a credible buyer to avoid involvement in nuclear proliferation.

Meanwhile, French company Orano denounced the convoy as “illegal,” claiming it had no knowledge of the cargo’s final destination and emphasizing that the ICSID ruling explicitly prohibited any transfer of uranium stockpiles from Arlit. Orano has reserved the right to pursue legal action, including prosecution.

On the night of December 3, 53 trucks belonging to MB TRANS, a company owned by Baye Mohamed, arrived in Niamey carrying uranium, while an additional 20 trucks owned by gold trader Saleh Boss were reportedly en route. These developments mark a decisive phase in the ongoing standoff over Niger’s uranium exports.
