Niger Strengthens Protection for Journalists and Combats Disinformation
Niamey, November 30, 2025 - On the eve of National Press Freedom Day, Minister of Communication Adji Ali Salatou emphasized Niger’s commitment to protecting journalists and fighting disinformation amid a challenging security and geopolitical context.
Minister Salatou warned of a “communication war” orchestrated by certain foreign powers, while reaffirming that press freedom is a legally guaranteed right, to be exercised responsibly and with respect for citizens. “The freedom of journalists ends where that of citizens begins,” he stressed, highlighting the delicate balance between transparency and public safety.
Acknowledging the difficult conditions under which journalists operate, the Minister underscored the State’s pledge to ensure their safety. He also pointed to the growing challenge posed by social media and the rapid spread of disinformation, noting recent measures to strengthen the sector, including a 90% reduction in media tax debt, the establishment of the National Communication Observatory, and a simplified tax regime for media organizations.
Looking ahead, the government intends to further professionalize the media sector through training, improved access to public information, and the promotion of journalistic ethics. Minister Salatou concluded by calling for information to serve as a tool for peace and national progress.
