Niger Strengthens Multilateral Ties with UN Agencies
Niger is deepening its multilateral partnerships, as reflected in recent engagements with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and UN Women.
In the health sector, discussions with UNFPA spotlighted Niger’s pioneering policy declaring maternal and perinatal mortality a public health emergency. Analysts report that this initiative has mobilized $2.7 million in domestic funds via a national telethon, alongside an additional $3.2 million reallocated from ministerial budgets.
Meanwhile, talks with UN Women focused on implementing Niger’s National Gender Policy within the broader context of the country’s “refoundation” agenda. Key initiatives under this framework include programs promoting women’s economic empowerment in agribusiness value chains and gender-responsive budgeting across 12 pilot municipalities.
Both UN agencies stressed the importance of aligning their efforts with Niger’s current transition roadmap, rather than adhering strictly to previous UN Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) commitments. Observers say this reflects a pragmatic approach by the UN to adapt to the nation’s evolving political landscape.
