Niger’s Economy Strains Under Ambitious Development Drive
NIAMEY - Niger’s economic outlook remains fragile, as the government pushes ahead with large-scale infrastructure projects amid mounting fiscal and social pressures.
The administration’s focus on transportation and energy investments underscores its state-led development model, aimed at modernizing key sectors and stimulating long-term growth. Yet, despite these ambitions, warning signs persist across the economy.
The Confederation of Nigerien Workers (CDTN) has raised alarm over delayed public salaries, the erosion of purchasing power, and rising unemployment, exposing the widening gap between official development rhetoric and daily economic realities faced by citizens.
This growing tension between ambitious national projects and limited fiscal capacity remains one of the government’s most pressing challenges. As Niger seeks to transform its economy while managing a tight budget and public discontent, success will depend on its ability to reconcile developmental aspirations with socioeconomic stability.
